Why Georgia Power Customers Should Be Concerned About Future Data Center Costs
Georgia Power customers have already seen steady increases in their bills from Plant Vogtle’s massive cost overruns and the utility’s profit model. As Patty Durand and Georgians for Affordable Energy explain in this newsletter, the bigger issue is how those costs are shared.
The PSC recently approved rules requiring very large customers – like data centers over 100 MW – to pay for the infrastructure needed to serve them. On paper, that’s meant to protect households and small businesses from absorbing the cost, but with small customers already paying higher per-kilowatt rates than industrial users, future growth could tilt the balance even more.
Meanwhile, Georgians are already paying more due to Vogtle and past PSC decisions. We broke down those earlier increases in our recent blog on Georgia Power’s rising electricity rates. What’s clear is that ratepayers remain exposed to risks and decisions outside their control.
The good news is you don’t have to stay at the mercy of monopoly utilities. By going solar, you can lock in long-term savings, reduce dependence on Georgia Power, and take control of your energy costs
